Joëlle Tuerlinckx

Born, 1958 in Brussels, Belgium

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Joëlle Tuerlinckx’s intuitive and poetic taxonomy of space elaborates on the conditions of perception as parameters for art production. In ‘film-objects’ and ‘exhibition-objects’, Tuerlinckx’s transitive practice entangles the phenomenological reality of object and subject as correlative bodies in moments of being in time. In episodic videos and frail installations that thematize the presentation of representation in its most reduced and fundamental form, the artist side-steps, averts or swerves around the spatial relations between inside and outside, three- dimensionality and two-dimensionality, in favor of an ‘alongside’ of spatial proximity. Reaching a degree zero that has no apparent meaning, syntax or narration, her Stretch Films (1999, 2000-2001), deconstruct the flatness of film and painting by pointing towards the durational element of perception.”
