Tsunamii.net

Founded 2001 in Singapore by Charles Lim, Tien Woon, Tay Hak Peng, Charles Moy, Melvin Phua, and Tan Kok Yam.

From the archived Documenta 11 website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Technological devices like mobile phones and the net have come to mediate, conflate and radically expand our notions of space, time, distances and the bodily engagements implied by them. The work of tsunamii.net seeks to unsettle the ‘geographically neutral’ conceptualization of the net by making physical location the primary reference. It involves a performer whose physical movements tracked by a GPS (Global Positioning System) device are sent via mobile phone to a remote base station that employs the positional data to initiate a series of web browsing movements. By way of a specially created program, webwalker, the artists have made walking in physical space the only means to browse the net.”
