“Dieter Roth was a painter, graphic and event artist, poet, object and filmmaker. He lived in Switzerland, Denmark, Iceland, Germany, and the US, collaborating repeatedly with Fluxus artists. Documenta11 will present an expanded version of Roth’s 1982 piece, A Diary, an installation of thirty film projectors and Super-8 films. The films, all shown simultaneously, depict autobiographical scenes from the artist’s life. ‘I wanted to show my daily life in the films here… So I didn’t have to do anything courageous, which would then be shown in (the film), but at the most, show the detours that lead around courageously lived events. I will show thirty films of this kind at once - a flickering, which dazzles and distracts from the poverty of each individual film.’ In addition Roth’s Large Table Ruin will be shown, as the artist noted himself, a modest relict of his oeuvre, begun by chance in 1970. A few tools were stuck in paint on his work table in Stuttgart, so he attached the other objects that were on the table, too, including some tape recorders, which were then used to record the noise of his work. New furniture, bottles, and tools were gradually added, and over the years the work became larger, more expansive. This wild growth of ordinary, used objects mirrored the artist’s creative process, running parallel to his life.”
