Lisl Ponger

Born, 1947 in Nuremberg, Germany

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Lisl Ponger’s photographic and cinematic work investigates the circumstances of places and their territorial occupation, the function of photographic and cinematic representation, and the presentation of cultural values. Ponger’s most recent photographic work on show at Documenta11, Sommer in Italien (Summer in Italy, 2001), now becomes a recorded trace of actual occurrences. After the G8 summit in August 2001, Lisl Ponger traveled to Genoa, Italy, in support of the VolxTheaterKarawane, an Austrian activist group that was prevented from leaving Italy and was arrested for a short period of time. Ponger’s photo series is remarkably restrained. She does not depict the blatant violence of the police, the trauma of the globalization opponents, or the devastation of the city by both sides during the course of events. Rather, she seeks out the aftermath, the latent vestiges that remain registered in the locations, even long after the events”—well-articulated graffiti, sealed drain covers, deserted squares, the independent media center, and central buildings such as the Palazzo Ducale, all beginning to look like snapshots from a private vacation. Her works are characterized by that which is temporally removed and no longer present, a latent component of each of her photographs and at the same time the particular political stance of her works.”
