Gabriel Orozco

Born, 1962 in Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“The molding of space as dematerialized matter leads Gabriel Orozco to a transient form of sculpture that assiduously transforms and shifts its weight in new directions. Refusing to split the sculptural body into opposing halves, into residual, perceptual objects and industrially produced commodities and signs, Orozco amalgamates disparate traditions of Western sculpture by operating on an exuberant array of matter. Imprinting the body literally, metaphorically, and indexically, Orozco’s practice bestows fleeting zones of activity that carry not only the beauty of creation and existence, but an intrinsic correspondence to a culturally coded surrounding. Fascinated by movement as virtual lines through space bequeathing mnemonic traces as indices of action and intervention, Orozco’s photographic practice is intertwined in his sculptural endeavors. Orozco’s formal economy neither falls prey to the dichotomies of the critical versus the affirmative, the phenomenological versus the conceptual, or the cultural versus the natural, as his silent sculptures lapse into that which exists beyond the boundaries of thought and interpretation.”
