Annette Messager

Born, 1943 in Berck, France

From the archived Documenta 11 website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Profound inner experiences of pain, horror, violence, loss, desire, ecstasy and the fallibility of memory are amongst the range of emotional states that concern Annette Messager. They disquiet precisely to the degree that they are uncontrollable; the understanding of subjectivity as ‘whole’ is torn apart and dissected. Working on multi-media installations, utilizing drawing, photography and soft sculpture and taking recourse to a legacy of Symbolism and magical, primitive, and erotic Surrealism, the fantastic and the horrific are fused with an affable imagery of daily life. With self- assumed job titles such as ‘Annette Messager Collector, Artist, Practical Woman, Trickster, and Peddler’, the artist ironically reflects upon (a male dominated) society’s urge to compartmentalize and separate. Messager’s recurrent attempts to achieve a sense of reconciliation with the act of living through fantasies and fictions of gender, violence and sex is driven by the thrill and the magic of collecting, in a passion bordering on the chaotic - a mere dam against the spring tide of the chaos of memories.”
