Joan Jonas

Born, 1936 in New York, USA

From the archived Documenta 11 website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Joan Jonas’ work explores issues of identity and desire across boundaries of very different materials and practices. Her work usually combines a live performance element and a film and/or video record or relay. Hers is an art of bricolage “ combining the widest range of literary sources from folk tales to contemporary news reports with an equally eclectic range of references, music, drawings, stage props, and objects unearthed from flea markets and attics. At the core of each piece is Jonas as performer, using herself as sculptural material.”
