Jens Haaning

Born, 1965 in Hørsholm, Denmark

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Since the early 1990s, Jens Haaning’s works have concentrated upon the peripheries and zones of conflict found within the social, economic, and political conditions of Western societies. Immigration, economic migration, and the tricks and loopholes of the global market economy are constant themes and strategies in Haaning’s works. In 1994, he installed a loudspeaker in a part of Oslo with a large Turkish population, which broadcast jokes in Turkish (Turkish Jokes, 1994)”—a tactic that left the listeners in uncertainty, not only about the subject of the broadcast jokes, but also about who was being addressed.”
