Leon Golub

Born, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, USA

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Rejecting what he regarded as the hermetic formalism of abstract expressionism, Leon Golub developed an aesthetic practice committed to political engagement. For more than five decades, Golub has been delving into the violent peripheries of a society mediated by images in paintings whose maimed surfaces contain an unsettling visual allure. His ravaged canvases, painted in lacquers and acrylics before being eroded with solvents and scraped with a meat cleaver, are monumental sites of confrontation with ideologies that manipulate and often obliterate the individual. Golub’s recent small-format work is characterized by a lighter scraping technique, greater exposed areas of unprimed canvas, a precarious corporeality and the introduction of textual traces. Larger canvases complement this output with mythic, often cryptic, archetypes and allegories. By presenting hybrid spaces in which catastrophe, anxiety, and dissolution are omnipresent, Golub continues to critique the irrational social sphere we inhabit, a reality in which bodily existence is perpetually threatened by public authorities and the public forms of communication they manipulate.”
