David Goldblatt

Born, 1930 in Randfontein, South Africa.

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“A progenitor of the reinvention of documentary photography in the charged territory of apartheid, David Goldblatt’s immense photographic corpus, dating from 1948, comprises critical historical and social documents representing the legacy of colonialism through the post-apartheid period. Having published political photographs in Life, Look, and Picture Post, he shifted from documenting political events to “exposing a situation” or focusing on the “states of being that lead to events.” Goldblatt’s approach to recording the architecture and landscape of South Africa ranged from photographing the township of Soweto to the white suburbs around Johannesburg.”
