Giuseppe Gabellone

Born, 1973 in Brindisi, Italy.

From the archived Documenta 11 website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Giuseppe Gabellone’s sculptures, made from media as diverse as clay, aluminum, canvas, wood, metal, raffia, straw, plaster, bricks, or polystyrene, always remain indispensable to Gabellone’s work, and can be divided into those granted a future physical being and those subject to destruction, only living on in the photographic image. While the sculptures can be assimilated and function in different dimensions, Gabellone’s photographs, on the other hand, prevent the viewer from seeing the sculpture in multiple perspectives. The determined viewpoint offered by Gabellone manifests the demolished sculpture in one unique photograph of which no editions are produced and the negative is destroyed. The sculptural experience is replaced by the photograph, which has become a permanent, yet incomplete duplicate of the sculpture: they manage to transcend time in rendering that-has-been (Barthes).”
