Artur Barrio

Born, 1945 in Porto, Portugal

From the archived Documenta 11 website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Artur Barrio belongs to a generation of Brazilian artists who began working at the end of the 1960s, the most repressive period of the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil after of the coup of 1964. Barrio’s work has been split since its inception: on one hand, he criticizes the false materialism that converts the work of art into a capitalistic object. On the other, he tries to recover in the work of art that which, contrary to a cumulative process, he identifies as pure loss, emotional discharge that passes from one pole (the artist) to another (the viewer), confusing them.”
