Gaston A. Ancelovici (film collective)

From the Documenta 11 archive website : www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

Founded 1945, Santiago de Chile, Chile

”Gaston Ancelovici belongs to a generation of documentary filmmakers in Chile who left the country after General Augusto Pinochet’s overthrow of Salvador Allende in 1973. As a member of the Group Colectivo Cine Ojo he worked on their first collective documentation while in exile. In 1986, Ancelovici returned to Chile to record the situation for the film Memorias de una guerra cotidiana (Memoirs of an Everyday War, 1986). The film describes the daily struggle of the civilian population against the measures of the police and the military, who reacted to the democratic protests with imprisonment, torture, and executions. In his recounting of individual stories, he makes clear that this struggle is not directed at particular political opponents, but at the entire population. Ancelovici’s more recent films also reveal an examination of the history and social and political conditions of Chile, where the filmmaker returned after Pinochet’s overthrow.”
