Extract as follows: “Had there been an art school in Guyana, Williams would probably have gone there after leaving secondary school. Instead, he joined the Guyana civil service and became an agricultural instructor. He was only seventeen when he was transferred from Georgetown to work ‘in the bush’, as the North West District was called. At first he regarded this as banishment from civilised life, and he could certainly see no adventure in it. But it brought him into contact with the Warrau Indians and it was this group of primitive people of Guyana’s north-west coast who helped him discover the true beauty and meaning of art.

… Living with the Warrau Indians was an experience the young Williams was never to forget, and during this period he painted and wrote a great deal. It was an experience that set him firmly on the road to [being] the sensitive and creative artist he is today.”
