Alfredo Jaar

Born, 1956 in Santiago de Chile, Chile

From the archived Documenta 11 website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“The core of Alfredo Jaar’s work lies in his aim “to make art out of information most of us would rather ignore.” Jaar’s belief that the imagery of photography robs the imagination of aesthetic transformation and emotional engagement is perpetuated in his continues plight to represent social, political, and human issues. In his photo, text, and light installations, Jaar translates the power of mass media and global violence through the medium of photography and it’s emblematic question of representation. Since the early 1980s, Jaar employs new strategies of presentation that, rather than compete with the speed of the info-highway and consumer images, try to contextualize and slow down the viewer’s process of reception and comprehension.”
