Date: 2 May, 1996 until 27 May, 1996
Organiser: Arts Catalyst

Body Visual exhibition, 2-27 May 1996 at Barbican Centre, and touring (no details of touring venues mentioned in the catalogue). Exhibition featuring the work of Helen Chadwick, Letizia Galli, and Donald Rodney “dedicated to the memory of Helen Chadwick 18 May 1953 - 15 March 1996”. Catalogue introduction by Nicola Triscott. Extract as follows: “The works in this exhibition are characterised by a physical human presence and show a warmth and eroticism rarely encountered in art that deals with medical science, which tends to be characterised by cool distance. The artists in Body Visual are emotionally and physically involved in their works. Helen Chadwick and Donald Rodney’s works exude the sensual impact of real engagement with the material body: human secretions, skin, hair and flesh. Letizia Galli’s works are distinguished by their warmth of emotion and intellectual rigour, but she has also felt the need to introduce very directly the real and tangible human body.”

Catalogue section on Donald Rodney features Flesh of My Flesh by David Thorp, In a Strange Terrain: Science on the Molecular Level by Dr Alison Bybee, and Race by Pallab Ghosh. Two full page details of Flesh of my Flesh (1996), Rodney’s contribution to the exhibition [3 panels: Colour/Black 7 white Photographs, Each panel 183 cm x 122 cm].

Within the catalogue, Donald Rodney’s practice is summarised as follows: “Donald Rodney work in mixed media and installation art. His powerful works, which are based on his own struggle for disability and also challenge the injustices and inequalities which confront black people, have been seen at the Cornerhouse Gallery in Manchester, the I.C.A. (institute of Contemporary Arts) and the Black Art Gallery (sic) in London. In 1995 he was an exhibitor in “Care and Control’, a major exhibition at Hackney Hospital.”
