Zulu: The Space above your Head was an exhibition of new work by Gavin Jantjes, which took place 9 September - 22 October 1989 at the City Museum & art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent. Press release as follows:

Gavin Jantjes is best known for his striking paintings which often combine images from different cultures. Over the past two years he has been working on a new series of paintings which develop these concerns.

“”Zulu”, the title of this exhibition, literally translated means “the space above your head”. Some of the new paintings refer to the sky or the heavens and consist of images of clouds, or, in other instances, words and figures floating against a dark background.

Another group of paintings are concerned with the relationships between African art and European modernism. African masks are juxtaposed with “ideal” geometric shapes or figures taken from Picasso’s early Cubist paintings.

A number of the new pictures also incorporate three dimensional objects which reinforce the paintings (sic) powerful physical presence and add to the complex range of ideas and images.

This is the first major exhibition of Gavin Jantjes’s new work and promises to contain many exciting new developments. The exhibition has been organised by the Edward Totah Gallery, London,”
