The Caribbean Connection

Group show at Islington Arts Factory. 1995
Date: 15 September, 1995 until 13 October, 1995
Curator: Denzil Forrester
Organiser: Denzil Forrester

Islington Arts Factory was the venue for The Caribbean Connection, an exhibition of work by five artists from different Caribbean islands/countries: Ronald Moody (Jamaica), Aubrey Williams (Guyana), Frank Bowling (Guyana), John Lyons, (Trinidad) and Bill Ming (Bermuda). The exhibition took place between September 15 - October 13 1995, the year in which africa 95 (sic) took place. The exhibition was brought into being by the Grenada-born British painter Denzil Forrester, who maintained a studio at Islington Arts Factory.

A very useful monochrome catalogue accompanied the exhibition. It featured a Historical Background Sketch by John La Rose and Errol Lloyd, plus Biographical Details of the five artists (two of whom were deceased) by Errol Lloyd.

From the catalogue: “Artists arriving from the Caribbean brought with them a cultural heritage which was already, in great measure, conditioned by metropolitan influences. Many of the artists however felt compelled to explore new forms of expression based on non-European perceptions as part and parcel, no doubt, of a process of mental decolonisation or simply reaching out to mine richer fields of expression. All the evidence suggests that Caribbean artists wished to do so without rejecting the lessons of modernity.”
