Catalogue for important solo exhibition by Frank Bowling, reflecting a decade of the artist’s practice, from 1967-77. The exhibition comprised some 16 paintings, from his popular and celebrated map paintings, through to a number of less figurative paintings. The exhibition was accompanied by a very useful catalogue containing a substantial essay on Bowling’s work by Frederick L Seidel, of New York, written in March 1977. Seidel began his essay with “Frank Bowling’s recent paintings are very beautiful, the most powerful and most refined resolution so far of old preoccupations of his. He makes his struggle smooth, pours it smooth and firm in these poured paintings, in absolute command, fifteen years of struggle now, his effort to see the light. It is effort. Bowling is quite talkative about that.”
