Frank Bowling RA - ROLLO 2006

Solo show at ROLLO Contemporary Art. 2006
Date: 9 March, 2006 until 13 April, 2006
Curator: Simon R. Gillespie
Organiser: ROLLO Contemporary Art

The exhibition, Frank Bowling, Latest Paintings: A Celebration of His Election to the Royal Academy of Arts, took place at Rollo Contemporary Art, London, 9 March - 13 April 2006. It happened in conjunction with The White Paintings, by Frank Bowling, RA, held at ArtSway, Hampshire,13 May - 2 July 2006.

From the preface to the exhibition’s catalogue, the paragraph written by Simon R. Gillespie, Director of ROLLO Contemporary Art:

“When I first visited Frank in his studio, I was struck by his extraordinary confidence in his use of colour and paint. Belonging to the famous class of 1962 at the Royal College of Art, which included David Hockney, Derek Boshier, Peter Phillips and RB Kitaj, he is a seminal figure in post-war British art. Bowling is the first black British artist to be elected to the Royal Academy in its 200 year history. It is an honour to be hosting Frank’s exhibition of latest paintings: a celebration of his recent election and a fitting recognition of a lifetime’s achievement.”

Zippers: New Works by Frank Bowling R.A

Solo show at ROLLO Contemporary Art. 2009
Date: 11 September, 2009 until 9 October, 2009
Organiser: ROLLO Contemporary Art

From the brochure accompanying the exhibition: “Zippers is the new series of work by Frank Bowling. Devised in 2009, these paintings exude life and vibrancy in their citric colours and energetic application of paint. As the name suggests, the straight yet jagged line running through the centre of each painting is the key trait in this latest series of paintings. The name also references Barnett Newman - an artist Bowling has sometimes alluded to in his titles, such as Who’s Afraid of Barney Newman, 1968.

Bowling himself, in the same brochure, writes “My work is indebted to and emerges (sic) the first generation of American Abstract Expressionist painters: Barney Newman, pollock, Rothko, and Clifford Still…”

Zippers took place at ROLLO Contemporary Art, 11 September - 9 October 2009, with a Private View on 10 September.

Zippers took place at ROLLO Contemporary Art, 11 September - 9 October 2009, with a Private View on 10 September.

A fold-out brochure accompanied the exhibition. It introduced the exhibition and included two quotes, one by Bowling himself and one by Mel Gooding, who, the brochure stated, “will be writing the long-awaited monograph of Frank Bowling’s works in 2010, to be published by the Royal Academy.”

The brochure features four small images from the exhibition, plus one larger one. The brochure’s covers features a detail of one of the works.
