The exhibition as described by the press release produced by the gallery: “African Gardens, a series of paintings and installations by Lubaina Himid showing from 2 April - 29 May 1993 at the Black Art Gallery. ”Conversations with the dead are evoked in a series of nine magical installations. each is dedicated to a personality. Among them Romare Bearden, Lanston Hughes, Augusta Savage, Jean Michel Basquiat - each one a black artists whose life and work has a perculiar [sic] resonance.”

An extract from the Artist’s Statement, also included on the press release: “”The painted works on paper form part of a larger plan for site spaecific artworks sculptures plants memories memorials and fountains. Gardens/docks/piazzas/beaches/airports/parks will never be the same. The installation mirrior/cloth/bowl, nine painted conversation with the dead turns theory of continuous black creativity into a clamour of vibrant and splendid reality.”
