George Fowokan Kelly

Born, 1938 - 1948 (probably 1943) in Kingston, Jamaica

From the catalogue, Creation for Liberation Open Exhibition Art by Black Artists, 1987: “Born in Kingston, Jamaica, as a child he was inspired by the landscape of Jamaica to start modelling in clay and stone. He came to Britain at the age of 14 but his talent was not encouraged. His interest in art revived when at the age of 17 he saw a ‘still life’ by Picasso. Seeing photographs of Benin Bronzes and travelling to Nigeria in 1974 as a musician and sound technician on a Jimmy Cliff tour further developed his interests. He now works full-time as an artist.”

Within this catalogue his name appears as GEORGE KELLY (Onar-F’owokan)
