Donald Bowen

Born, 1917 in London

Artist and curator Donald Bowen was born in London in 1917 and educated at Sloane School, Chelsea and subsequently at Chelsea School of Art. Following army service he studied at the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting 1947-1951, gaining a National Diploma of Design. There then followed a brief period of employment as a draughtsman in a stained-glass studios. Donald Bowen was for a number of years Curator, Art Gallery, Commonwealth Institute between 1953 and his retirement in 1979.

He contributed An Artist’s View of Contemporary Commonwealth Painters, to the publication Guyana Dreaming: The Art of Aubrey Williams,  Part Three: Critical Comments on the Work of Aubrey Williams.
