Press release for the publication, Donald Rodney: Doublethink

From the press release: “Autograph is proud to announce the publication of a major monograph - Donald Rodney: Doublethink - the first comprehensive and in-depth survey of the artist’s work. At the time of his death in 1998 at the age of 36, Rodney’s artistic career had spanned two decades and had produced some of the most engaging and innovative work by a British artist of his generation. With unique access to the artist’s private archive and including images never before published, Doublethink presents not only the wide range of art forms that he employed but also the ways in which self-portraiture and the body were often conduits for wider social and political narratives. It establishes the legacy of an artist that might otherwise remain overlooked, placing it at the heart of the artistic, social and political contexts in which it exists…”

Doublethink features newly commissioned essays by Eddie Chambers and Virginia Nimarkoh, an introduction by Richard Hylton and a preface by Professor Stuart Hall. Monograph published and produced by Autograph, The Association of Black Photographers.

Reviewed by Sonia Boyce

Article contains 2 photographic reproductions of the installation: “A Ship Called Jesus is a three part installation exhibition produced by Keith Piper. It was launched at the Ikon Gallery on 17 January and continued until 23 February 1991. The exhibition explores, through images, text and sound, the complex relationship of frican peoples to Christianity.” “With a degree of urgency this powerful, yet melancholic exhibition raises many important questions, too many to be addressed by one short article. It deserves to be toured internationally. If it’s in your area - go and see.”

Cover contains a small reproduction of one of Sunil Gupta’s photographs. Published by Autograph

The inside cover contains the following text and a list of contents: “In the past few decades discussions and debate has led to public awareness of the need for a Black Photography Centre in Britain. The dominant, modernist tradition has set the agenda for the kind of photography that has been seen in our galleries, books and magazines. This euro-centric definition combined with the exclusion of Blacks from all areas related to the study, art and commerce of photography has denied black photographers both access/support and an audience/market for their work. Autograph the Association of Black Photographers, a national organisation, has been established to create a forum for photographers in Britain, who are of African, Caribbean and South Asian origin, and also to educate and inform their audience.”
