The following biographical sketch appeared in the catalogue Artists of the Western Hemisphere | Art of Haiti and Jamaica, Art Gallery, Center for Inter-American Relations, 600 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y., October 10 - 27, 1968
“Philippe Auguste is the most verbally articulate of the Haitian primitive painters. This is not surprising because this newest and potentially most important artist had been a lawyer, three times a Magistrat de Paix and had written books on Haitian law. In his fifties and faced with bringing up eight children, he gave up the law and turned exclusively to painting, winning immediate recognition.”
