Momart Fellow at Tate Gallery Liverpool 1990 - 1991. This exhibition was produced when Maud Sulter was Artist-in-Residence at Tate Gallery, Liverpool. The Tour was organised by The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal and commenced the tour at Tate, Liverpool.

From the exhibition guide produced by Ikon Gallery, Birmingham: “Hysteria is an installation comprising photographic prints, marble plaques, scripted narrative and audio recording on compact disc. Hysteria is a story of a blackwoman artist who travelled from America to seek fame and fortune as a sculptor in Rome in the 19th century. It is a fictional tale based on fragments of the true life story of Edmonia Lewis, a successful artist who lived and worked around this period.’ Maud Sulter has tapped into something we all do much of the time: creating scenarios and stories in our minds, into which we project ourselves as heroes and heroines, victims and champions. However, in Eurocentric culture, dominated by the values and representations of white patriarchy which provides roles for other people in its terms, where are representations of strong, creative black women?’

From the Press Release produced by The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal: “The images tell the story of Hysteria, a nineteenth century blackwoman artist who travelled to Europe from the Americas to seek fame and fortune. The tableux present moments in her travels and to use contemporary twentieth century icons to suggest a continuum from past through present to future of the tenacity of blackwomans’ creativity Hysteria is the first major installation at the Brewery Arts Centre by a blackwoman artist and creates a catalyst for reviewing art history with regard to the issues of representation of women; both in art and as artists.’
