Ellen Gallagher

Born, 1960 - 1970 (probably 1965) in Providence Rhode Island

From the publication, In Black and White: Prints from Africa and the Diaspora, by Gill Saunders and Zoe Whitley, V&A Publishing, 2013: “Ellen Gallagher works primarily in monochrome, sharing an oft-quoted affinity with the work of Agnes Martin, but her images are more complex than simply ‘black and white’. Gallagher’s exquisite graphic sensibility frequently explores racial stereotypes. She does so not by literally re-creating them but rather through mining the complex grey area of lived experience ‘despite/around/within stereotype’.
